Fear of radiation has been exaggerated to scare people ... So a few powerful people can maintain total control of the world's most valuable power resource. Also there is no such thing as 'nuclear-waste' or 'harmful radiation'. In the early days nuclear reactors used unrefined uranium in reactors, that is out dated. Thermionic Electrical Conversion using Nuclear Radioisotopes from Uranium-238 and other materials that are called 'nuclear waste' can safely supply unlimited energy.

Uranium-238 sample

This is a sample of near-pure Uranium-238. It is nearly one-hundred percent pure BECAUSE it has been processed so that most of the usable Uranium-235 is taken out to be used for fuel or weapons. I bought it from United Nuclear. There is 5 grams of it inside the vacuum pouch (which I do NOT open in this demonstration).

Radiation exposure during an intercontinental flight

during normal solar activity, radiation levels at 10-11 kilometers cruise altitude are about 2-3 uSv/h, which is 20 to 30 times the radiation you're exposed to on the ground. thus, you get about the same dose as from 1-2 chest x-rays if you fly for 11 hours (but distributed to all of your body - not just the chest, of course). however, wearing a lead apron to protect yourself would be pretty much useless, as the cosmic rays are of very high energy (after all, they already got into the plane in the first place).
